Wix + DomainKing SEO Setup: How to Update Sitemap, Robots.txt & Rank Higher in Google

ree

When you build your website with Wix and connect your domain through DomainKing, it feels like you’ve ticked the big box — you’re live online.

But the truth is, your site is invisible until Google and Bing know where to find your pages.

That’s where your sitemap.xml and robots.txt files come in.

This tutorial breaks down how we at IbiFoundry set up and update our Wix sitemap and robots.txt, then connect them to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools step by step.

At the end, you’ll also get a free checklist: “Wix Sitemap & Robots.txt Checklist: Submit to Google + Bing in 10 Minutes.”

What is a Sitemap & Why It Matters in Nigeria

A sitemap.xml is a file that lists every page on your website that you want search engines to index.

  • Google uses it to crawl your pages faster.

  • Bing uses it to validate freshness.

  • Without it, you rely on bots to “discover” your pages, which is risky — especially if your site is new or small.

For a Nigerian website owner using Wix and DomainKing, the sitemap is your handshake with search engines. It tells them: “Here’s what I have, and here’s what’s updated.”

Step 1: Check Your Wix Sitemap

  1. Open your browser and visit: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Example: https://ibifoundry.com.ng/sitemap.xml

  2. You’ll see a structured XML file auto-generated by Wix.

  3. This includes blog posts, static pages, service pages, and dynamic content.

  4. It updates automatically when you publish or unpublish a page.

💡 Tip: Bookmark your sitemap URL — you’ll need it for both Google and Bing.

Step 2: Submit Sitemap to Google Search Console

  1. Log in to Google Search Console → search.google.com/search-console.

  2. Add your property (choose Domain level for full control).

  3. In the left sidebar, click “Sitemaps.”

  4. Paste: sitemap.xml in the box and click Submit.

  5. Google will show the status (Success, Couldn’t Fetch, or Errors).

✅ If you ever see “Couldn’t Fetch,” wait a few hours. Wix sometimes delays refresh.

Step 3: Submit Sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools

  1. Open Bing Webmaster Tools → www.bing.com/webmasters.

  2. Add your site (you can import directly from Google Search Console if connected).

  3. Go to Sitemaps → click Submit Sitemap.

  4. Paste the same https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.

  5. Done! Bing will start crawling within 24 hours.

Step 4: Robots.txt in Wix

  • Visit: https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Wix generates this automatically too. It usually looks like:User-agent: Allow: Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.

  • If you want to customize (e.g., block admin URLs, add multiple sitemaps), go to: Wix Dashboard → Marketing & SEO → SEO Settings → Robots.txt Editor.

At IbiFoundry, we use robots.txt to highlight our main sitemap and block unnecessary query pages that shouldn’t be indexed.

Step 5: Verify with DomainKing (DNS Setup)

If you’re using DomainKing for your domain, Google and Bing will ask you to prove ownership.

  1. Log in to DomainKing dashboard.

  2. Go to Manage DNS Zone.

  3. Add a TXT record with the verification code given by Google or Bing.

  4. Save changes → wait a few minutes → click Verify in Google/Bing.

Once verified, your sitemap submission will stick permanently.

Step 6: Keep It Healthy

  • Update pages → Wix auto-updates sitemap.

  • Re-submit only if you change domain structure.

  • Use URL Inspection (Google) to push urgent updates.

  • Check for errors under Coverage (Google) and Crawl (Bing).
